Palliative Care
The emphasis at Eden Valley Hospice is on Palliative Care -
although the clinical team cannot provide a cure, they offer comfort,
support and relief from many distressing symptoms. The Hospice staff
aim to improve the quality of life for the patients and relief for
their families.
Why Do We Need a
Hospice?
Current figures show that one in three people will contract
one of the 200 known forms of cancer at some point in their lives. Due
to the ever-increasing age of the population, it is thought the number
of cancer cases will rise by more than 30% over the next decade.
Although these appear to be worrying statistics, they are only a few
of the reasons why Eden Valley Hospice was built.
The Hospice also provides care for people with other life-limiting
conditions which are not cancer related such as motor neurone disease,
muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis, heart failure, chronic lung
diseases, renal failure and chronic neurological conditions. We strive
to provide the highest standards of nursing and medical care, to
sustain quality of life and dignity and to provide patients with
relief from pain.
What Does the Hospice
Provide?
Eden Valley Hospice provides a range of care to adult patients,
including In-Patients, Day Hospice and Out-Patients. Details of the
services we offer to children and young people can be found on our
Children's Hospice website.
The In-Patient Unit
This is a 12 bedded unit and comprises of eight single en-suite
rooms and a four bedded ward style room. Patients are referred to the
Hospice via their GP, Macmillan or District Nurse or a hospital
consultant. Patients are admitted for symptom control, respite or
terminal care.
The Margaret Dunne Day Hospice
The Day Hospice has 10 places per day, on four days each
week and patients attend
for physical, psychological or spiritual care. A local GP, Macmillan
or District Nurse or a hospital consultant may refer patients and all
patients are seen by a senior member of the Hospice staff before
referral.
The Outpatients Clinic
Our Outpatient clinic operates on a Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday and enables patients to see one of our specialist doctors to
deal with issues such as pain management and/or symptom control.
Working closely with your local GP we will endeavour to improve the
quality of life for those attending our Outpatient Clinic. Medical
input is also provided at Penrith Day Hospice and Penrith Community
Hospital on Thursdays.
