The Margaret Dunne Day Hospice

The New Day Hospice will be officially opened and named on Friday 27 June by TV Journalist and Broadcaster Martyn Lewis CBE.

The new unit has been created thanks to some specific funding we obtained from the Department of Health. Our challenge now is to make it a real home from home for the patients that use it. If you can help us do this please visit our special wish list by clicking here

Day care is a very popular facility at Eden Valley Hospice currently taking up to 10 patients per day, on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays.

It creates the opportunity for patients, and their families, to have time to themselves and to meet with others who can fully  appreciate how it feels to have a life threatening or life limiting illness.

For families and friends who care for those attending day care on a day to day bases it enables them to take ‘time out’ of the caring role for a day so that they can do whatever they wish with their free time i.e. shopping, cleaning, time with friends etc, things that give a sense of normality from the stress and pressure that caring for someone with illness can bring.

Day care is open four days a week as follows:

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 10.00am to 3.00pm.

On Tuesdays, we have an outpatient clinic by appointment only, for patients referred to us by healthcare professionals.

Tuesday afternoons provide the time for the day care team to do either home or follow-up visits.

There is also a lymphoedema session on Tuesday afternoons by appointment only through the lymphoedema nurse.

Day care is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who attend and support the nursing staff to provide a high standard of care to each patient.

Who Is Day Care For?

bullet

Anyone living with cancer or other progressive and life threatening illnesses, which are incurable and encompass physical, emotional, social or spiritual difficulties requiring input from the palliative care team.

Is It Appropriate For Me?

bullet

Anyone can have a referral made preferably through their GP, district nurse, social worker or Macmillan nurse. Following the referral, one of our day care team will visit the patient and/or family to obtain relevant details and give more information on the Hospice services that are available and the patient can decide if they would like to try it.

Patients can be as involved in as many of the activities as they desire but will not be forced to do anything they do not wish to do. It is perfectly acceptable to have quiet times as each patient will have varying levels of energy or experience ‘off days’, and the staff in day care understand and appreciate this.

What Do I Need To Bring Into Day Care?

bullet

You should bring any current medication that needs to be taken between the hours of 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.

bullet

If the you need extra medicine i.e. pain killers that you take as and when needed, please bring these as well.  We do ask that if your doctor changes any of your medication in any way, please inform a member of the nursing team so that care is continued.

The majority of patients attending day care take responsibility for their own medications, but if this is a problem, please let us know and assistance will be given. We have the facility to store medication to ensure its safe keeping. Normally all medication will be returned to the patient at the end of day care but if we need to make other arrangements please discuss this with staff.

All refreshments i.e. drinks etc. and lunch are provided free of charge. Our aim is to enable each patient to have as full and as active day as their illness allows them or they desire.

Transport

bullet

We have our own Hospice Ambulances as well as a team of volunteer drivers. We are therefore normally able to provide transport to and from Day Care depending on distance involved.  We can usually also arrange transport to hospital appointments if these overlap a day care day.

We try hard to make a visit to Day Care as pleasant as possible and fill the patients day with interesting and rewarding experiences. As a charity there are many demands on the funds we have available and therefore we can not provide all the equipment we would like.  If you can help us with a donation for a specific item for our new Day Care unit please click on our Wish list
